Easter Psalm #3

May We Rise (Psalm 148, 149, 150/Happy Are We All Together)
1

Happy Still-Easter! Yes, it is still Easter and will be until the first week of June this year, with Pentecost. But, this will be my last Easter Psalm.

This song pulls together the last three Psalms and weaves them with some of the words of the traditional song Happy Are We All Together.

It’s a song full of life and joy, and it speaks especially to the pleasures of life. I’ll never forget when, after we sang this song at a gathering, someone said, “We don’t often sing about the pleasures of life in church.”

How true that can be, and yet, how out of sync with these ancient prayers, passed down through the centuries - these prayers that revel in the joy, the delight, the pleasures God provides in our lives.

We don’t always feel joy and delight in our days. There are plenty of reasons for that. But what I also see is that we can refrain from allowing ourselves even pockets of delight because we think we don’t deserve to experience or enjoy that.

But God is the inventor of joy, the source of delight, the inspirer of all the pleasures this life can hold. So let’s allow ourselves those moments to celebrate, to give thanks. And in doing so, may we all rise and never fall.
